'Madam Pink': Female action hero fights violence against women in new movie

"I saw statistics on rape before it happened to me. But it wasn't real. After it happened, my friends told me their first sexual experience was with rape. For many women here, rape is normal. Sex is not about choice. And now I can't ignore this reality." -Madam Pink, M.P.

She wears a pink wig, pink mask, tight pink trousers and top, and pink sneakers. She beats up men twice her size. Fantastical, yes. But the situations "Madam Pink" confronts in the new video feature M.P. are all too real.

A survey conducted by the Gender Centre on Violence Against Women and Children in Ghana found that 1 in 5 women have been forced to have sex against their will, and most never report the incident. Women who speak out often face stigma, familial and economic pressures, and an attitude that rape is usually the woman's fault.

But some women in Ghana are trying to fight back against sexual assault and domestic violence.

M.P. is a new movie that explores issues of violence against women through a fictional narrative. M.P. is the story of a woman who transforms herself into a martial arts-wielding super-hero called "Madam Pink" after she herself is raped. Madam Pink, or "M.P." proceeds to take vigilante justice against potential rapists and abusers.

M.P. is being produced by ZongoMundo and Blue Wave Media, in collaboration with the Academy of Screen Arts, and students from the University of Ghana. The M.P. project was initiated after the producers witnessed an alleged incident of sexual assault first-hand and were alarmed by the apathetic public response. A number of the women in the cast and crew have themselves experienced sexual assault which they did not report at the time. They hope this movie can be used to break the silence and apathy surrounding this issue.

M.P. will be released as part of a larger campaign to raise awareness of violence against women, and of activities local NGO's are taking to counter this violence and promote women's self-defense. M.P.'s producers hope to host local and international screenings of the movie combined with public discussions, and to use proceeds from such screenings to benefit organizations working to combat violence against women.
